A task force on supporting disabled adults in their parenting role was set up by the joseph rowntree foundation with support from the department of health the association of directors of social services the disabled parents network and relevant voluntary organisations. Supporting disabled adults in their parenting role the inspection marked a considerable step forward in that it identified problems facing disabled parents as a distinct group of users in accessing services and highlighted the need for more explicit and better co ordinated practice in respect of disabled adults with parenting responsibilities. Practical arrangements to ensure that adult services provide specialist support advocacy and counselling to parents in cases where childrens services are involved and that support for disabled adults in their parenting role remains on the agenda even where child protection procedures are underway. Working together to support disabled parents of eight local authorities arrangements for providing support to disabled parents for their parenting role found that only one had policies specifically aimed at meeting the needs of this group of parents the findings bore out concerns that families were falling between adults and children . Legislation should underpin work to support disabled parents guidance on fair access to care services6 also reinforces the importance of supporting people in their parental roles disabled parents and families experiences and views 11 parents are part of families and families are part of communities support
